And while some elements of Cubase 5, such as the ability to play back (although not edit) VST Expression data, became supported in the minor Nuendo updates, the full functionality of Steinberg's music‑oriented application has not been available in Nuendo and the Nuendo Expansion Kit (see 'Catching Up With Cubase' box) until now. In addition to providing Nuendo updates, Steinberg also introduced a major new version of Cubase at the beginning of 2009.
And although three years have passed since the last major release of Nuendo, Steinberg have made available numerous incremental updates in the intervening time that have added both functionality and support for new hardware. After some brief sibling rivalry with Cubase during the troubling twos, where Nuendo struggled to forge its own identity, the application's focus started to become clearer with the release of version 3 in 2005 and, particularly, version 4 in 2007.
